Copyright Information and Tutorials

The UT System Crash Course in Copyright
This site is appealingly designed for the purpose of providing the user with copyright information.  In addition to providing a fair amount of good information, the highlight of this particular site is the actual “Crash Course Tutorial.”  The tutorial is intended to help the user learn “about how ownership of copyrighted materials works, what is fair use and when and how to get permission to use someone else's materials.”  It makes use of audio, pictures, and text to provide an appealing instruction.  A test is also included to verify the understanding and comprehension of the content.

© Primer
The © Primer is an interactive tutorial provided by the University of Maryland University College.  It “outlines the requirements for copyright protection as well as discusses the parameters of use and access of copyrighted material.”  It provides questions and answers to important copyright questions (including resources relating to each), and different real life scenarios exemplifying copyright law.  The site is interactive and user friendly, perfect for an introduction to copyright law. 

Current Copyright Literature
The Current Copyright Literature site “is a resource for keeping informed of current articles related to U.S. copyright law.”  This site is updated about every 1-2 weeks and provides bibliographic information to current articles relating to copyright law.  Many also include links to a .PDF file of the first page of the article for the user to view.

U.S. Copyright Office
This is the official site for the United States Copyright Office, probably the most authoritative source for copyright information.  Included is basic copyright information, the ability to search copyright records, how to register works, official copyright laws and policies, etc.  Also included is an RSS feed to help keep informed and up-to-date on copyright law.

Copyright Law of the United States
This is the official Copyright Law of the United States, provided by the United States Copyright Office.  This site provides the actually Copyright Law, in whole or in parts, and the amendments to the Law in HTML or .PDF format.

Reproduction of Copyrighted Works by Educators and Librarians
This booklet, titled “Circular 21,” provides “basic information on some of the most important legislative provisions and other documents dealing with reproduction by librarians and educators.”  Included are sections on copyright, fair use, reproduction by libraries and archives, and liability for infringement.  Each section included excerpts from governmental reports and brief discussions on the topics.

 ALA – Distance Education and the TEACH Act
This site is published by the American Library Association and discusses the TEACH Act and its relation to distance education.  It includes the legislative history, a document discussing the meaning and importance of the TEACH Act, and other related information.

TEACH Act Toolkit
The TEACH Act Toolkit site is provided by North Carolina State University and includes information about the TEACH Act.  The site explains in detail what the TEACH Act is and what it does.  Some of the information is specific to North Carolina State University and it hasn’t been updated in a few years, but the information is still useful for those interested in the TEACH Act.  

Copyright Information for Educators
Copyright Information for Educators provides numerous links to additional sites relating to different aspects of copyright laws.  Included are basic information sites, copyright in academic settings, obtaining copyright permissions, etc. 

Stanford Copyright & Fair Use Center
The Stanford Copyright & Fair Use Center provides a wealth of copyright information.  Included are links to government sites, informational FAQs, resources for librarians, current issues, etc.  This is essentially a one-stop shop for any copyright information one may need.

University of Minnesota Libraries Copyright Initiatives
The University of Minnesota Libraries publishes this copyright information site.  In addition to providing copyright information relating to teaching, research, and libraries, this site also includes “The © Decision Map” to help with decision making, a FAQ, and example scenarios exemplifying copyright issues.

The Campus Guide to Copyright Compliance 
The Campus Guide to Copyright Compliance is an informational site intended for academic institutions.  The site provides information about various aspects of copyright law as they relate to academic institutions.  Also provided is information specific to various types of resources and their copyright protections, including Interlibrary Loan, digital content, photocopies, etc.

The ©opyright Management Center is an information site provided by Indiana University.  In addition to providing basic information about copyright law and fair use issues, this site also instructs users on obtaining permission to use copyrighted material and how to get copyrighted protection.  Some of the information is specific to Indiana University, but there is still much valid and useful information. 

Concordia University Legal: Copyright
This site provides a brief description of Copyright Law, what items are included and excluded in the law, and other basic information about copyright and fair-use.  This site contains very basic information and is perfect for users seeking a brief introduction to Copyright Law.

Regents Guide to Understanding Copyright & Education Fair Use
Although written with the faculty, employees, and students of the University System of Georgia in mind, this site provides useful information for all students and educators.  The site includes numerous examples illustrating fair use (great for students), background information, and legal information.
